Tacoma Meaningful Movies is pleased to co-present an in person screening of Powerlands with The Grand Cinema at 606 Fawcett Ave Tacoma, WA during the Tacoma Film Festival on Wednesday, October 12th at 6pm! Powerlands stars Ivey Camille Manybeads Tso, a young Navajo filmmaker, who investigates the displacement of Indigenous people and the devastation of the environment caused by the same chemical companies that have exploited the land where she was born. She travels to the La Guajira region in rural Colombia, the Tampakan region of the Philippines, the Tehuantepec Isthmus of Mexico, and the protests at Standing Rock.In each case, she meets Indigenous women leading the struggle against the same corporations that are causing displacement and environmental catastrophe in her own home. The Distant Barking of Dogs follows the life of 10-year-old Ukrainian boy Oleg over a year, witnessing the gradual erosion of his innocence beneath the pressures of the on-going war in Eastern Ukraine. Having no other place to go, Oleg and his grandmother Alexandra stay and watch as others leave the village, showing just how crucial – and fragile – family is for survival.Please join Meaningful Movies in Kirkland for The Distant Barking of Dogs, a beautiful, powerful film from the frontlines of war-torn Ukraine.
