Today is Indigenous Peoples’ Day! This holiday falls on the second of October each year and is made to celebrate the Native American, Native Hawaiian, and Alaska Native communities and commemorate their diverse cultures. It is also a day to acknowledge the historical mistreatment of the Indigenous populations in the United States and to recognize their rights and sovereignty. Originally suggested at a United Nations conference that advocated for Indigenous peoples, the holiday was proposed as a replacement for Columbus Day, which remains the U.S. federal holiday even though many local and states celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day instead.
