Fernando Betancourt started with Meaningful Movies as an intern working with a local group in Renton, Washington. It didn’t take long for Meaningful Movies Project staff and board to realize how talented and hardworking Fernando is, and less than two years after Fernando started as an intern, he was invited to join the board. Now, even though Fernando is in film school in California, he remains on the board. This is what Fernando says about MMP: “I love MMP and no matter where I am in life, I’ll always remember this organization and that you gave me a chance. It was this organization that helped ignite my love for filmmaking when there was a time I was unsure about this as a career. But now, I know 100% that this is what I want to do with my life. I can’t wait for Fall semester to start! :)”
If you have ever wondered what it would be like to study film, Fernando agreed to provide a snapshot of some of the projects that he led or participated in during spring of 2022. Go Fernando!!
“This was my Film 2 final. We all had to make a documentary about someone in the Arcata/Eureka area so I did my friend Angie who is a Resident Advisor on campus. I live off campus and always wondered what dorm life is like. With this, I was able to see a glimpse of that and I had a lot of fun getting B-roll for this!”
“This was my final for my Scene Analysis class. We had to adapt a screenplay on something we haven’t watched, so I took two screenplays and combined them, both being the sitcom “King of Queens” and from the spanish melodrama “La Rosa de Guadalupe.” This is in Spanish but I have English subtitles so people can know what’s going on. This I made for my mom and she loved it! There is violence and cursing so fair warning.”
“We had to make a film with just sounds that we had to gather ourselves which was a nice learning experience. I think the title speaks for itself. ”

“This was a pretty cool project that my class got to work on. Our film professor had the opportunity of directing a short documentary on Arcata high school and our entire film class got to work on this together! I was a PA and did the lighting for the interviews. A few students got to edit the film and we submitted this to the CSU arts festival! This was a great opportunity and I’m glad my fellow students were able to make something so great.”

“This was a documentary my friend Mara did that I got to help out on. I did the sound for this one.”
“This was a scene that my group had to recreate for our Scene Analysis class. I got to be a camera operator and was able to use the handheld rigs!”
