WAmend and Meaningful Movies Project Team Up on I-735 to “Get Big Money Out of Elections”

by April 14, 2015 0

Language for WAmend’s Initiative I-735 (“Get Big Money Out of Elections”) has just been approved by the Secretary of State’s office, and the signature gathering campaign kickoff is underway.  Details on the initiative can be found on the WAmend website, http://www.wamend.org/.

The process is to secure sufficient signatures between now and Dec 31st, at which point the initiative will be placed on the upcoming Nov 2016 ballot.

The Meaningful Movies Project will be working with WAmend to organize film screenings in more than a dozen (and possibly up to 20) locations across the state illuminating the problems that exist with the influence money has in our election system and on our democracy.  From now until the end of Dec, 2015 the focus will be on education and signature gathering.  From January, 2016 until the 2016 elections will be on education and getting the vote out.

The plan is to develop a number of separate film series, each containing 2 to 4 films to be shown in consecutive months on topics about the influence of money in politics and the effects this has had on various aspects of our society and our democracy.  Each series will be provided with support materials, web resources, contacts in organizations that may wish to participate with you, support of WAmend field organizers, and more.  Low cost screening rights have already been negotiated for the films.

Groups, organizations and even individuals can participate; there’s no need to be an already established Meaningful Movies venue.  We can help you evaluate if this is something you’d like to pursue.

This is an important effort, and one that if successful will have a huge impact, both on helping significantly to pass this initiative calling for a 28th Amendment to the Constitution to overturn Citizen’s United, as well as helping grow more Meaningful Movies groups.

If you’d like to jump in and help on this campaign, please contact us at: info@meaningfulmovies.org.

Thanks!
