The Wisdom of Trauma – film showing and discussion
PRESENTED BY: Online EventNAMI Eastside WA and Meaningful Movies in Kirkland are pleased to present a virtual screening of The Wisdom of Trauma, followed by a community panel discussion.
One in five Americans are diagnosed with mental illness in any given year. Suicide is the second most common cause of death in the US for youth aged 15-24, and kills over 800,000 people a year globally and 48,300 in the USA. Drug overdoses kill 81,000 in the USA annually. The autoimmune epidemic affects 24 million people in the USA. What is going on?
The Wisdom of Trauma is a deep dive into the origins of trauma, and how our society might be getting it completely wrong when we say a person is sick or injured or “bad”. Gabor Maté is a world renowned expert on trauma and leads the viewer through many sides of trauma. Through short segments with people from all walks of life and his own reflections, he shines a light on how trauma really affects them personally, affects their families and the greater society around them. This movie does include very sensitive subjects and may be triggering for some people. Dr. Maté gives us a new vision: a trauma-informed society in which parents, teachers, physicians, policy-makers and legal personnel are not concerned with fixing behaviors, making diagnoses, suppressing symptoms and judging, but seek instead to understand the sources from which troubling behaviors and diseases spring in the wounded human soul.
A quote from the movie: “Dr. Maté, he allowed me to see it [trauma] as a humanistic crisis. It was a human not being identified in the light in which they deserve to be..”
If you or anyone you know has been affected by trauma, you should watch this film.
