SUMMARY:The Wild - Screening & Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Supporters of Bristol Bay\, Alaska\, and defenders of the world
’s largest and last fully intact wild salmon run will join Backbone Mean
ingful Movies for a livestream of “The Wild\,” an award-winning docume
ntary that deals directly with the controversial Pebble Mine and how this
last-of-its-kind wild salmon ecosystem hangs in the balance.\n\nThe lives
tream event will take place Tuesday\, February 2nd and kicks off at 6:30 p
.m. Pacific. At-home viewers will watch a live stream of the hour-long fi
lm\, and an expert panel will follow with a live virtual Q&amp\;A. Panelis
ts include Carl Wassilie\, Sam Mace\, Mark Titus\, Eric Frith.\n\nTickets
are available by donation here: BackboneCampaign.org/thewild\n\n"The Wild"
is a real-life David and Goliath story focused on the perseverance of nat
ure versus the ecological impact of open-pit mining. The documentary featu
res interviews with the Pebble Mine CEO and board chairman Tom Collier\, P
atagonia founder Yvon Chouinard\, actor Mark Harmon\, celebrity chef Tom C
olicchio\, actor/activist Adrian Grenier\, various tribal civic leaders an
d congressional gold medal recipient Steve Gleason\, among other luminarie
s.\n\n"The Wild" is a timely project for this precarious moment in America
n history. The latest passion project by acclaimed director\, Mark Titus\,
the film connects the dangers of the Pebble Mine to Titus’s own story a
s a recovering alcoholic.\n\n“Every alcoholic knows the folly of these s
ix words: This time it will be different\,” Titus said. “The same is
true of the last of our wild places. Time and again we have watched these
“projects” erase what’s left of them. If we lose Bristol Bay\, it’
s the end of the line. If we can’t treat our disease that is fueled by t
he unrelenting quest for more\, we will lose our last\, greatest source o
f regenerative wild food and an economy that could go on forever if we lea
ve it be. We don’t get a next time if Bristol Bay falls now.”\n\nMore
than just a documentary about saving the last pristine habitat for wild sa
lmon in the world\, "The Wild" explores the impact Pebble Mine could have
on America’s food security. Bristol Bay’s sustainable salmon fishery i
s an inexhaustible\, regenerative supply of wild caught food\, and the fil
m addresses the indigenous rights of the Yupik\, Dena’ina and Alutiiq pe
ople\, who stand to lose a millennia-old culture and organic food supply t
hat could last forever if undisturbed. And\, the film also details the thr
eat to the $1.5+ billion-dollar annual fishing industry that provides 14\,
000 American jobs and half the world’s supply of sockeye salmon.
