SUMMARY:THE OCCUPATION OF THE AMERICAN MIND
DESCRIPTION:Meaningful Movies Tacoma is excited to present “The Occupatio
n of the American Mind.”\nJoin us for free popcorn and a post-film discu
ssion!\nAbout the Film: \nOver the past few years\, Israel’s ongoing mi
litary occupation of Palestinian territory and repeated invasions of the G
aza strip have triggered a fierce backlash against Israeli policies virtua
lly everywhere in the world—except the United States. The Occupation of
the American Mind takes an eye-opening look at this critical exception\, z
eroing in on pro-Israel public relations efforts within the U.S.\nNarrated
by Roger Waters and featuring leading observers of the Israeli-Palestinia
n conflict and U.S. media culture\, the film explores how the Israeli gove
rnment\, the U.S. government\, and the pro-Israel lobby have joined forces
\, often with very different motives\, to shape American media coverage of
the conflict in Israel’s favor. From the U.S.-based public relations ca
mpaigns that emerged in the 1980s to today\, the film provides a sweeping
analysis of Israel’s decades-long battle for the hearts\, minds\, and ta
x dollars of the American people in the face of widening international con
 demnation of its increasingly right-wing policies.\n\nGuest Speaker:\nWe a
re honored to have the founder of the Tacoma chapter of Jewish\nVoice for
Peace\, Ms. Sallie Shawl\, as our speaker. Sallie has been active in soci
al justice causes since the 1960's\, beginning with civil rights and the F
ree Speech Movement in Berkeley. A major focus for 18 years was protesting
the Trident nuclear submarine weapons system at Ground Zero Center for No
nviolent Action near Poulsbo\, resulting in multiple arrests and jail/pris
on sentences. She co-founded the Tacoma chapter of Jewish Voice for Peace\
, and in 2013 she was awarded the Greater Tacoma Peace Prize\, which inclu
des a trip to Norway to attend the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony.  She has v
isited Israel and Palestine and has worked for Palestinian human rights si
 nce the 1980's.\nRSVP Here
