Please join MM Bellevue for our online screening of the documentary, The Librarians, created by award winning director and producer Kim Snyder.  When lawmakers seek to review a list of books, librarians find themselves on the forefront of a battle about restrictions on library content.  Fearless librarians across the U.S. unite to stand against standards that restrict topics and content about issues including race and LGBTQIA+.  As Librarians well know, controlling the flow of ideas means controlling communities.  The Librarians examines what these restrictions might mean for education and public life.

Amendment Rights. As they well know, controlling the flow of ideas means control over communities.

In Texas, the Krause List targets 850 books focused on race and LGBTQIA+ stories – triggering sweeping book bans across the U.S. at an unprecedented rate. As tensions escalate, librarians connect the dots from heated school and library board meetings nationwide to lay bare the underpinnings of extremism fueling the censorship efforts. Despite facing harassment, threats, and laws aimed at criminalizing their work – librarians rallying the cry for freedom to read is a chilling cautionary tale.

Following The Librarians we will hear from Brenda Sparks, a collection librarian for the King County Library System.  She has worked on numerous book awards and programs for the American Library Association and presentations about libraries, intellectual freedom and publishing. Please join us immediately after the film to learn about our local library system.

This powerful film is 88 minutes long so come prepared with snacks and a drink.  Thanks to PBS, this film is available for screening as part of the Independent Lens series.
