Meaningful Movies of Kirkland has just the event for you! On Saturday, July 24th at 8:00pm, they will be screening the short film Other Side of the Hill, which will be followed by a live discussion placed outdoors! This will all take place at 308 4th Ave S (at Northlake Unitarian Universalist Church) Kirkland,WA. We Can't wait to see you all there!Where can East and West, Republicans and Democrats, find the common ground needed to address climate change? How can industry and environmentalists work hand in hand? And how can local economies find opportunity in a lower emissions future?Other Side of the Hill explores the impacts of a changing climate in rural Eastern Oregon – as seen through the eyes of local leaders on the ground. From innovative timber operations in Wallowa County to large scale solar in Lakeview, we amplify the voices of rural communities often left unheard. In a time of unprecedented cultural divide between rural and urban Oregon, we find common ground in an urgency to address a changing landscape.Join us for a showing of the film, a conversation with the filmmakers and a live discussion outdoors at Northlake Unitarian Universalist Church in Kirkland, Washington. Meaningful Movies Friends and Leaders,The Meaningful Movies Project Board and current Manager, Anne Miller, are delighted to report that we have hired a fabulous new MMP Manager, Jode Littlepage!Jode is a community organizer who is passionate about her desire to make positive change. Growing up in public housing projects in the San Francisco Bay Area, Jode is also a product of the foster care system. She has seen many injustices in her childhood and adulthood communities which strengthen her resolve to work for people, and a planet, in need.With academic studies including film, clinical psychology and social work, Jode has used her education to assist her in becoming an effective advocate for those who are marginalized, minimized, and overlooked in society. She hopes to give a voice to the voiceless. Using her own experiences to shed light on those who are suffering, Jode strives to advocate for individuals and communities experiencing injustice within our society.Amidst the ignorance, fear, and often hatred that pervade this time of political turmoil, and that are a part of our U.S. and world history, Jode finds hope in Meaningful Movies mission to educate, build community, and advocate for positive change. Because of this, Jode has enthusiastically joined MMP!The Meaningful Movie Project combines two things that she is very passionate about: film and social justice. As a new member of the MMP village, she hopes to facilitate education, raise awareness, and promote healthy dialogue.The MMP Board, outgoing Manager – Anne Miller, and Meaningful Movies Venue Leaders are thrilled to welcome Jode to our team! Now, more than ever, we need positive voices in the ecological crisis. Join the Meaningful Movies Project to see director Damon Gameau’s 2040, a hopeful film about climate change solutions and “exercise in fact-based dreaming.” Using only the solutions that are available to us today, Damon envisions a positive future for our children and the planet. The event will take place on Monday, July 12th at 6:30pm PT.The film takes a solutions-based approach to how we can mitigate, using the technology we already have, the enormous global issues we currently face. The main themes/solutions looked at in the film are empowerment of women and girls; marine permaculture and ocean regeneration; regenerative agriculture; renewable energy; and circular economy. Many youth wonder whether or not they will inherit a world with clean air to breathe, clean water to drink, food that is safe to eat and wilderness left to explore. At a time when all these things are threatened by pollution and climate change, how do we support a healthy planet in the years to come? On June 24th, at Meaningful Movies first youth led event, panelists and audience members delved into these questions. Audience members watched the film Power of Us on OVEE which was then followed by a recognition of the Power of Art Competition winners, Stella Dull, Margalo Tanouye, and Agnes Dull; and a panel discussion on Zoom. Panelists included Sunrise Movement Seattle youth representative, Hannah Lindell-Smith; Meaningful Movies Intern, Natalie Johnson who moderated the event; Sai Amitha Konanki who is a rising sophomore in high school; and Emma Johnson who is a rising senior in high school. All of the panelists spoke honestly and powerfully about both their concerns about the state of our environment but also about ways to take personal and collective action. Natalie, Emma, Amitha, and rising sophomore Stella Palaveeva were the primary organizers of this event.Audience members said afterwards that how impressed they were by the event and that they were incredibly appreciative of the work of these young adults to bring attention to our climate crisis. One audience member said in an email that she was especially impressed by all of the links and related content that were included in the OVEE chat and which were researched and included by our MMP intern, Natalie Johnson.
