The Alaska Suite
PRESENTED BY: Meaningful Movies in KirklandWe’re trying something different this month: More than just a movie, this event is a multimedia presentation.
“The Alaska Suite” is a story of beauty, loss, and hope. It features a five-piece chamber jazz ensemble performing the original music of Seattle pianist and composer Nelda Swiggett. But this is not just a concert. Combining the emotional power of multiple mediums – live music, spoken words, images and poetry – the Alaska Suite seeks to inspire its audience to be proactive about addressing climate change.
The performance celebrates the beauty and majesty of Alaska; laments the rapid impacts of global warming in Alaska (and all of the Arctic); alerts the audience to similar impacts where they live; and last, and most importantly, uplifts spirits with reasons for hope and calls to action.
Alaska is our “canary in the coal mine,” and should be a wake up call for all of us.
Special Guests: Nelda Swiggett

Jump into a conversationI have just written a short memoir about life in Alaska in 1973 as a log cabin builder. I will gladly attend this event!
That was a very memorable event, a novel experience to tell a story through live music, sometimes even narration and live music together. Each part prefaced with introductions read by the composer/pianist to each particular aspect of climate change, and then played out in music in an imaginative, playful way that still conveys the seriousness of the topic at the same time. A great juxtaposition, also with the well selected images projected on the big screen behind the performers. I am glad it was probably 3/4 full, well attended and worth supporting those talented musicians and the cause.
