Happy 50th Anniversary to National Nutrition Month! It is an annual campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in 1973. During this month, everyone is invited (and encouraged) to learn about making informed food choices and developing healthy habits. The theme this year is "Fuel for the Future." It focuses on eating with sustainability in mind and protecting the environment as we nourish ourselves. Eatright.org has a list of "50 Ideas to Get Involved in National Nutrition Month®." Some of the items include trying a new fruit or vegetable, trying a meatless meal, and learning about nutrition programs. Some food related films to check out!Fixing Food (telling stories of people who are working to lower our carbon footprint with impactful new ways to gather and prepare the food we need)Just Eat It: A Food Waste Story (follows the story of how the filmmakers and food lovers, Jen and Grant, saved money, reduced wasted food and carbon emissions, and addressed food insecurity)That Sugar Film (brings the industry and the physical effects of sugar into high focus) ... No plans for this Sunday? Join Meaningful Movies Tacoma & Gig Harbor at 2pm at The Grand Cinema for their final film screening in March! This inspiring film will be followed by a community conversation with TACID, speaking locally on the topics of disabilities and the stigma that is unfortunately still too common.Orchestrating Change Tells the inspiring story of Me2/Orchestra, the only orchestra in the world, created by and for people living with mental illness and those who support them. Co-founded by Ronald Braunstein, once a world-renowned conductor whose career was shattered when his diagnosis of bipolar disorder was made public. The mission of the orchestra is to erase stigma one exhilarating concert at a time. As they rehearse, perform, and prepare for a major concert, these extraordinary musicians have no idea how much the orchestra will change their lives in poignant and powerful ways.Register here: TGC_OrchestratingChange.eventbrite.comSpecial Guests: Tacoma Area Coalition of Individuals with Disabilities (TACID)Sponsors: The Grand Cinema Tacoma ... Join us tonight! Are you a gardener or plant lover? As spring is about to begin, do you want to learn more about the relationship between plants and insects, and what you can do to support a healthy environment? Join Mt Baker, First Church, and West Seattle Meaningful Movies for a conversation about the movies INSECT APOCALYPSE and WHY LAWNS MUST DIE. You can choose to watch these two short videos on your own, in advance of our event, or you can watch them with us as a group tonight (March 16th). We will start at 6PM on Zoom with a quick introduction and then we will watch the short videos together. Next, at approximately 6:30, we will have a community conversation about the films. We will be joined by climate activist and native plant hero, Andrea O’Ferrall; and native plant experts Marcia Smith, Chris Fuentes, and Bibi Powell. They will share tips on how to get rid of your grass, and suggestions for native, waterwise plant options. Afterwards, we will all have a discussion about what we can do to support a healthy environment in our neighborhoods and backyards.INSECT APOCALYPSE tells of the alarming decline in insect populations that has been happening over the last 50 years. www.documentarymania.com/player.php?title=Insect%20ApocalypseWHY LAWNS MUST DIE takes a look at the grass lawn’s history of class exploitation and settler colonialism and how that ties into the American lawn culture we see today.www.youtube.com/watch?v=megIy0mO5-4Join us for a community conversation via Zoom on March 16: us02web.zoom.us/j/84322063054?pwd=UWxOQjJIUG53cS9ubXd0MWRHY2ZUZz09youtu.be/megIy0mO5-4 ...
