SUMMARY:Coded Bias - Screening and Community Discussion
DESCRIPTION:When MIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini discovers that man
y facial recognition technologies fail more often on darker-skinned faces
or the faces of women than others\, she delves into an investigation of wi
despread bias in artificial intelligence (AI). As it turns out\, algorithm
s\, data\, and computers are not neutral. From facial scanning used for po
licing and surveillance to automated HR systems that mirror and magnify wo
rkplace prejudices\, these technologies are created with fundamentally bia
sed building blocks. Emboldened by these troubling discoveries\, Buolamwin
i goes on to start the Algorithmic Justice League and joins a group of pio
neering women to shed a light on the underlying biases in the technology t
hat shapes our lives and threatens our democracy.\n\nThis film will also b
e available on PBS from March 23 to March 31. You can watch the film on yo
ur own or as part of our group screening on March 25th\, which will be fol
lowed by a community conversation on Zoom about the challenges of technolo
gy\, facial recognition\, surveillance\, and what we need to do to preserv
e and protect our fundamental rights.\n\nREGISTER HERE for our event: http
