SUMMARY:Online Discussion of "Suppressed: The Fight to Vote"
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: This event is a digital discussion\, not an in-per
son event.\nWhat can we do about voter suppression? \nFind out on Sunday\,
June 28 (Noon - 1 p.m.) during a Meaningful Movies at First Church onlin
e discussion. We think you’ll come away from this event inspired\, energ
ized\, and determined to make a difference for underrepresented voters. To
join the Zoom meeting:  Register here. \n\nThis online discussion of
the film "Suppressed" does not include a viewing of the film. Before joini
ng the event with us\, please watch the film at your convenience here.
(If film starts in the middle\, move cursor to the left to see the beginni
ng of the film.) \n\nWe will discuss the award-winning film Suppressed: T
he Fight to Vote and hear from Andrea Miller\, co-founder of and powerho
use behind Reclaim Our Vote\, a nonpartisan campaign which has reached o
ut to nearly a million voters of color in states like Georgia\, Alabama\,
 Virginia\, Texas\, and Mississippi—states with a long history of voter s
uppression. \n\n"Suppressed" is a new documentary that weaves together p
ersonal stories from voters across the state of Georgia to paint an undeni
able picture of voter suppression in the 2018 midterm election where Stace
y Abrams ran to become the first Black female governor in the U.S. The fil
m was directed by Robert Greenwald (director of Outfoxed\, Walmart: The
High Cost of Low Price\, and Making A Killing: Guns\, Greed\, &amp\; the
NRA). \n\nThe issues faced by Georgians in 2018 included polling place cl
osures\, voter roll purges\, missing absentee ballots\, extreme wait times
\, and many voter ID issues – all of which disproportionately prevented
many people of color and students from casting their ballots. Suppressed:
The Fight to Vote features experts\, poll watchers\, and everyday Georgi
ans speaking to the reality of voter suppression and the threat it poses t
o our democracy. In a race ultimately decided by 54\,723 votes\, the film
exposes that the basic constitutional right to vote continues to be under
siege in the U.S.\n\nDuring this online event\, learn how we can take acti
on right from our own homes to do something about voter suppression in t
his critical election year. \n\nWatch "Suppressed: The Fight to Vote" her
 e.  It's only 37 minutes long and is free. If the link does not work\, yo
u can also find it by searching at youtube.com. \n\nSpecial guest:  Andr
ea Miller\, co-founder of Reclaim Our Vote\, a nonpartisan campaign to add
ress voter suppression. At the event\, Ms. Miller will share what each of
us can do about voter suppression.  \n\n
