SUMMARY:From Selma to Soweto
DESCRIPTION:From Selma to Soweto is a historic look back at 1980s America.
It documents the persistence\, focus and hard work it took to achieve a
goal for freedom and justice\, a goal made even harder because it was op
posed by the POTUS\, Ronald Reagan.\n\nLong one of South Africa's most imp
ortant and powerful allies\, the United States becomes a key battleground
in the anti-apartheid movement as African Americans lead the charge to cha
nge the government's policy toward the apartheid regime. A grassroots move
ment to get colleges\, city councils\, and states to divest their holdings
in companies doing business in South Africa spreads across the entire nat
ion pressuring the U.S. Congress to finally sanction South Africa. This st
unning victory is won against the formidable opposition of President Ronal
d Reagan. African Americans significantly alter U.S. foreign policy for th
e first time in history. European sanctions follow\, and with them\, the p
olitical isolation of the apartheid regime.
