This film tells the story of the American Civil Rights Movement through its powerful music – the freedom songs that protesters sang on picket lines, in mass meetings, in paddy wagons and in jail cells as they fought for justice and equality. These songs evolved from slave chants, from the labor movement, and especially from the black church. These songs enabled people to sing words they could not say and were crucial in helping protesters face down brutal aggression with dignity and non-violence. Directors Bill Guttentag and Dan Sturman use contemporary artists to interpret the music and messages of the Civil Rights Movement including John Legend, the Roots, Richie Havens, Wyclef Jean and more.

This acclaimed film has been shown at numerous festivals and screenings and won the Vancouver International Film Festival Rogers People’s Choice Award, the Chicago International Film Festival Gold Plaque for Direction, and the Morelia International Film Festival Audience Award. The film also made the Academy Award Shortlist.

Mount Baker Meaningful Movies is screening this documentary at the Mt Baker Park Presbyterian Church, 3201 Hunter Blvd. South on Thursday, May 30th at 6:30 pm. Doors open at 6:00 pm.

After the film, attendees are invited to stay for discussion. The South Seattle Climate Action Network and other local groups will provide info tables with opportunities for action.
