“Following the Ninth” is about the power of music and human resilience in dark times. Beethoven’s Ninth was used in four historical moments to rally the oppressed or to comfort those in mourning: in East Berlin when the wall came down, in Chile to give hope to the imprisoned, in Tienanmen Square, and in Japan following the earthquake and tsunami. It is a way of diverting attention, momentarily, from our current dark climate challenges and political anxieties to one of hope and a call for Brotherhood.
