Fish War
PRESENTED BY: Meaningful Movies Port TownsendJoin Meaningful Movies Port Townsend either IN PERSON (that’s right, we’re back in person for the first time since COVID!) or online for our screening of Fish War.
When the state of Washington made it illegal for tribes to fish for salmon in their usual and accustomed places, it was a declaration of war. Fish War follows the tribes’ fight to exercise their treaty-reserved fishing rights. A landmark court case in 1974 would affirm the tribes’ treaty rights and establish them as co-managers of the resource, but the fate of salmon in the Pacific Northwest still hangs in the balance.
A panel discussion will follow the film.
Fish War is presented in cooperation with the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission (NWIFC), a support service organization for the 20 treaty Indian tribes in western Washington that are co-managers of the region’s salmon and other natural resources with the state of Washington. NWIFC provides services to tribes in areas such as fisheries management, habitat protection and fish health.
Admission is free but we gratefully welcome your generous donations, which play a vital role in covering the expenses while presenting the films we screen. Thank you for your support.
This is our first hybrid screening with both in-person and online options, so please come join us in-person if you’re able, or join us online using the link below.
