Dammed to Extinction
PRESENTED BY: Meaningful Movies in WallingfordThis film features Puget Sound Southern Resident Orcas, of which only 73 remain. For centuries, three unique pods of orcas have primarily lived on chinook salmon along the northwestern Pacific coast and in the Salish Sea. Now those salmon are on the precipice of extinction due in part to four obsolete Snake River dams. “Dammed to Extinction” shows how removing these dams will help save salmon and orcas.
A broad and growing coalition of scientists, conservationists and citizens say removing these Lower Snake River dams is a chance we have to bring back abundant runs of salmon and the orca that depend on them. There are other salient issues which would help the orcas as well, such as protected coastal prime feeding zones for whales between April and Sept.
Citizens regionally and nationally are calling for bold leadership and urgent action. Northwest elected officials have begun to step up and advocate for some big changes to restore our salmon, protect our orcas and invest in our communities. Eastern and Western Washington are one watershed, and this issue brings us together, to stand up and protect what we care about.
Join us for the film and discussion afterward, on what orcas need – and what we all can do together to get it done.
