SUMMARY:Coded Bias - Film Screening and Discussion on Juneteenth!
DESCRIPTION:Join Meaningful Movies in Kirkland on Juneteenth (June 19th) fo
r our first live event since the start of the pandemic.  We will be showi
ng "Coded Bias\," a powerful film about the impact of technology on civil
rights and privacy\, followed by a discussion.  The event will be held ou
tdoors at Northlake Unitarian Universalist Church.\n\nWhen MIT Media Lab r
esearcher Joy Buolamwini discovers that many facial recognition technologi
es fail more often on darker-skinned faces or the faces of women than othe
rs\, she delves into an investigation of widespread bias in artificial int
elligence (AI). As it turns out\, algorithms\, data\, and computers are no
t neutral. From facial scanning used for policing and surveillance to auto
mated HR systems that mirror and magnify workplace prejudices\, these tech
nologies are created with fundamentally biased building blocks. Emboldened
by these troubling discoveries\, Buolamwini goes on to start the Algorith
mic Justice League and joins a group of pioneering women to shed a light o
n the underlying biases in the technology that shapes our lives and threat
ens our democracy.\n\nYou can watch the film on your own or as part of our
group screening on June 19th\, which will be followed by a community conv
ersation about the challenges of technology\, facial recognition\, surveil
lance\, and what we need to do to preserve and protect our fundamental rig
hts.\n\nBesides our live showing on June 19th\, you will also receive a li
nk and password to watch the film on your own.  The film is also availabl
 e on Netflix.\n\nREGISTER HERE: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/coded-bias-fi
