The Bellevue Meaningful Movies Group invites you to the screening of BEHIND THE SHIELD. A documentary about the cultural politics of manhood, militarism, nationalism, and race in America’s most popular and influential sports league.

Celebrated author and Nation magazine sports editor Dave Zirin tackles the myth that the NFL was somehow free of politics before Colin Kaepernick and other Black NFL players took a knee. Digging deep into the history of the league and navigating a stunning excavation of decades of archival footage and news media, Zirin traces how the NFL, under the guise of “sticking to sports,” has promoted wars, militarism, and nationalism; glorified reactionary ideas about manhood and gender roles; normalized systemic racism, corporate greed, and crony capitalism; and helped vilify challenges to the dominant order as “unpatriotic” and inappropriately “political.” The result is a case study not only in the power of big-time sports to disseminate stealth propaganda and reinforce an increasingly authoritarian status quo, but also the power of activist athletes to challenge this unjust status quo and model a different, more democratic vision of America.

I tried 4 times during a a 13 minute time period to get into this movie which I was very wanting to see. No one let me into the group although the message kept saying that the host knew I was in and would let me in shortly – it never happened. And also Welcome to Eastshore Unitarian Church. Nope didn’t happen. So I hope this will be shown again at another time/location as I had referred several people to see it and so wanted to see it myself..

      Hi Ami,

Thank you for letting us know. I’m sorry to hear you had such a hard time to try to attend our screening. We try our best to avoid situations like this but with technology sometimes we come across glitches. Right now, the film isn’t slated to be shown again but that can change. Please continue to check our website where we post about upcoming screenings and/or sign up for our weekly newsletter. Hope to see you at another one of our events. All the best. 🙂
