A Choice of Weapons: Inspired by Gordon Parks
PRESENTED BY: Online EventIn celebration of Juneteenth, join Meaningful Movies in Kirkland for a showing of “A Choice of Weapons: Inspired by Gordon Parks” followed by a community discussion featuring local filmmaker and storyteller Anthony Tackett.
Directed by John Maggio, “A Choice of Weapons” explores the enduring legacy of photographer, writer, composer, activist and filmmaker Gordon Parks and spotlights the impact of his visionary work on the next generation of artists. Through the lens of three contemporary photographers we see the legacy of Gordon Parks come to life: Devin Allen, whose photograph βBaltimore Uprisingβ of the Freddie Gray protests was featured on the cover of Time Magazine; LaToya Ruby Frazier, who for five years followed the Flint, Michigan water crisis and most recently photographed Breonna Taylorβs family for Vanity Fair; and Jamel Shabazz, whose photographs on the streets of New York form a visual history of the hip hop era while simultaneously presenting affirming images for his community.
Anthony Tackett has worked 22 years as a storyteller and filmmaker for a number of organizations locally and internationally and heads Abstract Media, a company that focuses on uplifting and empowering his clients to help them realize their vision and their brand. He is the founder of the Seattle Filmmakers of the African Diaspora and serves as Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors at Langston. He teaches storytelling and the filmmaking process at Alan T. Sukiyama High School in Seattle.
The film will be streamed (shown online) within the Zoom meeting followed by the community discussion. After registering you will also receive a link to view the film on your own if you prefer.
